Tarot - The Minor Arcana

Major Arcana

Minor Arcana

The Minor arcana consists of 56 cards that are in suits called Cups, Swords, Wands and Pentacles or often referred to as coins. These cards each have their own unique meaning and as a suit each suit also stands for certain meanings.

In the suit of Cups, is one that represents happiness, love, and fertility and when in a layout with other cards these cards aid in the outlook in the better interest of the person if in the upright position. However if they are in the reversed position they may not have as good of an outcome in the reading. The Cups are associated with water and with this it represents the subconscious mind and reason.

The suit called Swords represents misfortune and aggression, however it also is a suit of courage and ambition depending on how it appears in the layout whether upright or reversed. This suit showing in a layout can either be good or it can be bad depending on its position and the cards that surround it in the layout.

Wands are a suite that stand for energy and glory, they are a suite that when upright they can stand for energy, growth and ideas. When in the reversed position they are not as lucky of a card, they can often foretell of ill luck.
The suit known as Pentacles or Coins is one that foretells of money and material gain, and in the upright position this is good fortune in money matters. If the card in the layout is in the reversed position it is not so fortunate and can mean loss of material possessions or a job.

While each of these suits means something as a whole it also will have great meaning separately in a layout depending what position it is in, the upright or the reversed. It will also have other cards that surround it that can lessen or make more definite the meaning of the card. As well as when they are near a card from the Major Anacana this will also help to place on of these cards in a more positive light or in a negative light.

These suits consist of 16 cards and have a Page, a Knight, a Queen and also a King in each suit, which closely resembles the regular card deck with the exception of the Page who is not included in this regular playing deck.
The tarot deck suits are also in some ways associated with the zodiac as the suits represent air, water, fire and earth similar to the signs of the zodiac.

The largest difference in the Minor Arcana and the Major Arcana is that these suits do not carry the power that the others do with the exception of how they are laid out in the reading that make the cards from the Major Arcana either more delightful or more menacing in a reading and much of this is dependant on whether the cards are laid upright or reversed in the layout.
